“Thank you for not giving up on me.”

Just before Christmas, a client called Collier Resource Center (CRC) because she needed help with her FPL bill.  Her soon-to-be ex-husband was moving away and cancelling his FPL account.  Our client was extremely concerned because she needed electricity to run her medically-necessary and life-sustaining equipment and she didn’t have the $400 to transfer the past due account to her own name.

What sounded like a daunting task at first, was quickly and efficient solved by our volunteer Voncile Whitaker.  Voncile coordinates the LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) at FPL and, thanks to her detective work, a paid-in-full account in the client’s own name was discovered.  She managed to transfer the FPL service to our client without any additional expense.

When the client was called back to inquire about how she was doing (this follow up is part of our case management services), she began crying.  The volunteer calling her thought something was wrong.  Instead she found out that this woman was crying tears of joy for the help she had received.  We treasure what she told us because it describes CRC best.

She said, “Thank you for not giving up on me.”

That’s who we are…that’s what we do.  Our trained local volunteers keep searching and don’t give up on our clients.  We know how to get things done.  It is what makes us unique and effective.
